Sugar continues to be the topic of debate and quite rightly so. In practice this week, I have had the pleasure of working with a new client, who was embarking on a journey to better health. To give you some background, let’s call my client Joanne. Joanne has just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, is in her early 40’s and has struggled with her weight throughout her life. Shocked, bewildered and scared, she arrived at my door.
Type 2 diabetes is a westernised, modern day condition and is more and more common, due to the sugary diet that we succumb to. A person with type 2 diabetes has insulin resistance, meaning the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin or the body doesn’t react properly to insulin. As insulin is used to manage glucose (sugar) levels in the blood, not producing enough insulin can have catastrophic effects on the body; including narrowing of the arteries, heart attack, damage to the kidneys and eyes and the potential of a diabetic coma.
The most frustrating and scary part of all of this? Your diet is crucial to ensuring that type 2 diabetes doesn’t arise in the first place. Of the 2.6 million people in the UK who are diagnosed every year, the majority could have prevented this very limiting condition, through diet alone.
Joanne’s diet consisted of mainly carbohydrates, processed and sugary foods. Unfortunately for Joanne, and a lot of my clients, she just didn’t realise how much sugar she was consuming daily. There were lots of signs that Joanne was on a sugar roller coaster:
Signs & Symptoms of blood sugar imbalance:
- Gaining weight or finding it harder to lose weight
- Low energy
- Difficulty concentrating
- Craving sweet foods, bread, cereal or pasta
- Energy slumps during the day or after meals
- Prone to hormonal symptoms
Joanne, as with most of the population, didn’t pay much attention to the signs and had ignored them for such a long time that they had become a normal part of life. She, like most, assumed that age had a lot to do with her lacklustre energy and range of issues.
Let me tell you, if you’re experiencing any of the above (and by no means is this the extensive list) then these are clear signs your blood sugar balance is out of whack. There is a high probability that the foods you are eating are creating spikes in your blood sugar.
Sugar is, in my opinion the most addictive and destructive substance in our food chain today. Chronic illnesses such as Diabetes, Cancer, Alzheimer’s and other degenerative illnesses have been linked to sugar, yet we still continue to consume hefty amounts. Why? Because it’s addictive of course! The brain’s response to sugar has been likened to that of a hit of Class A drugs, so no wonder we find it difficult to go cold turkey.
